In October of 2022 the harddrive on my MacBook died, and with it hundreds of demos, half written songs, and several incubating albums.

Oddly enough, this has proven serendipitous in forcing my hand to move on from tonnes of digital mass sitting in the back of my head(drive).

This album was planned but sitting on the backburner. I had the MP3s backed up online, so I used a free mastering program and then converted the MP3s to WAV on a free website. This is because Bandcamp doesn't let you put MP3s up.

Unorthopop is a celebration of doing whatever you want for no reason. I recorded it between 2019-2021. I wanted to make strange songs so I did. Some of them are awful. My studio in Japan was my tiny bedroom. I didn't have monitors or anything. They're unmixed, the vocal takes are scratch demos, instrument performances are missing and some of the songs are so sonically incongruent.

I love imperfect demos. I have a copy of Hobart band RABBIT's original demos on my iPhone and you can't get it anywhere else... hehe. Treasure.

For some reason when we're doing music we think we have to make an album of a certain style or sound. Why? Who cares? Let's play. Todd Rundgren made 'A Wizard, A True Star' in 1973 for this reason. In 2018 Ty Segall released 'Freedom's Goblin', freedom being the operative word: Make whatever you want. Of course we admire the standalone masterpieces that make up our foundational music experiences... but why stop there? The White Album doesn't make any sense and it's great. Try Headphone Masterpiece too if you haven't.

Anyway, here's Unorthopop.
